Goodwill to Launch Vegetable Oil Packaging Venture – Fundraising Campaign Seeks $3 Million for Start-Up Expenses

In addition to our existing AbilityOne contracts, Heartland Goodwill Enterprises is proud to announce our largest endeavor to date: an AbilityOne contract to package soybean oil for the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) international and domestic food aid program.

The contract is expected to create 40 jobs with an estimated 20 positions filled by people with disabilities. All team members hired to support the operation will be well-matched to positions based on work experience and skill. Entry-level Production Workers will de-palletize containers and feed the packaging line with components like cans, closures and case boxes. Sanitation Technicians will be trained to clean food processing equipment. Oil Receivers will be responsible for pumping bulk oil out of rail cars into storage tanks that feed the line.

“This initiative is great for Iowa and our agricultural sector and manufacturing industry. Supplies will be regionally and locally sourced. Good paying jobs will be created for people with significant disabilities and others. Training opportunities will also be created that will build Iowa’s talent pipeline and support the hiring needs of area manufacturers.”   – Jess Schamberger, Goodwill Vice President of Operations

This project also has international impact. Vegetable oil packaged by Goodwill will support the humanitarian work of the World Food Program. Their food aid efforts touch more than 80 countries and 80 million people who are food insecure each year. Two-thirds of their work is in conflict-affected countries. The World Food Program also provides food assistance to those affected by emergencies such as natural disaster.
Total start-up costs are projected at just under $7 million. Goodwill still needs to raise about $3 million in order to move ahead with the project. Start-up expenses include the initial product and supply inventory, consulting fees, facility rent and utilities, personnel and training, facility renovations and equipment expenses.
