ISO certification and LEAN training

Goodwill’s commitment to ISO certification and LEAN training was instrumental in securing a significant long-term contract for sub-assembly work with Whirlpool-Amana in mid-2007. Most of the work will be done in Cedar Rapids, with selected jobs performed in Iowa City. There is a potential here for $1.5 million in annual revenue and jobs for over 100 individuals.

Staples Grant

In June 2007 Goodwill received an $11,732.85 Grant from the Staples Foundation for Learning.

The grant will fund a retail skills training program for high school students with disabilities during their final year of high school.

Mike Townsend, Senior Vice President, says the Staples grant will serve as the cornerstone for an upgrade of Goodwill’s retail training program and will help many students train for opportunities throughout the world of retail. “We thank the Staples Foundation for making this grant possibility available to Goodwill.”

The project proposes that 24 students, eight per trimester, will train for retail occupations and work toward successful employment outcomes. Training will cover diverse topics such as customer service skills, retail terminology, and loss prevention as well as basic skills such as interviewing, writing resumes and appropriate work attire.

Homeless Veterans Reintegration Program Grant

Goodwill of the Heartland was awarded a $199,600 Homeless Veterans Reintegration Program grant by the US Department of Labor in July, 2006.

This was a highly competitive national grant process and our first direct federal grant. The program serves veterans in the Quad Cities area, including Clinton, Scott, and Muscatine counties in Iowa and Henry, Rock Island, and Whiteside counties in Illinois. The grant was renewed for a second year in July, 2007.

Five-Year Plan Goals Achieved

With the move of its Washington, Iowa store to a new facility in July, 2007, Goodwill completed a five-year plan of rapid growth in retail operations. Of the nine stores in operation in early 2002, eight have been relocated. In addition, three new stores have been opened to serve new markets in Rock Island, Illinois, and Marion and Clinton, Iowa. A new Iowa City logistics center (RSC), completed in 2004, houses transportation, warehouse and salvage operations.
