Girl Scout Good Turn Day

A Community Service Project

Girl Scouts Troops of Eastern Iowa & Western Illinois have the opportunity to collaborate with Goodwill Industries of the Heartland on their Annual Good Turn Days Service Project.

All area Girl Scout Troops have the opportunity to participate in this community service project on behalf of Goodwill of the Heartland. Participation in the Good Turn Days Service Project is voluntary.

The event allows the troop members to benefit their local community in four ways:

  • Participating troops complete a community service project benefiting an area not-for-profit;
  • Troops help the environment directly by collecting goods that might otherwise be sent to the landfill;
  • Troops directly contribute to the community good by helping to reduce, reuse and recycle goods;
  • Troop members earn a training experience (offered by Goodwill as a thank you) that helps them better understand the challenges that people with disabilities face.

Troops use flyers provided by Goodwill or they may prefer to make their own posters to help publicize the event in schools, churches or neighborhood centers. Later they collect and deliver those donations to their area Goodwill Store or Donation Center.

After completing the spring collection, Goodwill staff members offer participating troops the opportunity for training about Goodwill’s services for people with disabilities and the organization’s unique role in community recycling efforts. Training events include activities to help Girl Scouts increase their awareness of people with physical and mental disabilities, and how language shapes attitudes about people and their abilities. Other activities introduce Girl Scouts to ideas about the ways they can recycle everyday, household items.

Individual troops receive a certificate of participation and each Girl Scout receives a patch commemorating their involvement.
